The pictures above are of my set of runes,
based on the most widely used runes. For Rune history, Click
here. Runes are really just an alphabet, but
when put on stones, wood, ceramic, or metal, is said to have the
power of divination.
I got into runes completely by chance, thanks
to my mother. She handed me a burlap bag with clay runes, a
book, and a cloth to read read them on, and I took to it like a fish to
water. She said she didn't really like them, but me, I love
them.
My strong connection to nature is part of why I like runes. But
don't assume that just because they deal so much with nature, technology
is the rival to the runes. Nature taps into the sum of the world's
energy, while technology hums with the sum of man's ingenuity- there's a
balance there. These ancient symbols still speak to our
technologically advanced world.
I didn't like the "feel" of the
runes Mom gave me, so I made my own to make it more
personal. I used rocks and gold paint (see above). This would
be a good thing to do with beach stones you collect. If you
use paint, you'll want to use some kind of sealant or varnish. I
use mod-podge or polyurethane, but both tend to chip off after a
few weeks. If anybody knows something that sticks to rocks
better please tell me, I'd appreciate it.
You also need a bag to hold the runes. This keeps them from being
affected by bad outside energy. Your bag needs to be made of
some natural, "living" material, like leather or buckskin,
wool, cotton, or hemp. Mine is buckskin, and I carry it with me
everywhere, feeling this makes my runes more connected or attuned to
me. (A kid carrying a deerskin bag full of rocks in a school
hallway can raise some odd questions! )
Overall, I find the runes very rewarding, I love helping people and this
lets me do just that. If you're thinking of getting into runes, I
wish you the best of luck! However, it will require a real love of
nature and you'll have to give people bad news sometimes. I hope this
has informed you a bit about the runes, thanks for taking the time to
read it!
